Thanks to Dan Woog and his 06880 blog for this video. It’s a message for us all from the corona virus!

Let me know your reaction. It’s a little harsh but I really liked it.

What To Do During Lock Down

What are you doing while you have to stay in? Are you catching up on reading? Sorting your photographs?

Bruche and Teya with Nkiru in the center

One friend suggested possible activities on Facebook, “after you’ve alphabetized your spice drawer!” For me, I’m happy to be back in teaching mode! My grandchildren, Teya, a girl age 10 and Bruche, a boy age 8, have homework from school and from their lesson teachers.

We log into Google Classroom, enter their codes, and download the assignments. We’ve only had two days of lessons so far. Bruche had a worksheet on adverbs and adjectives. Teya’s was on prepositions. Both found the exercises fairly easy. Bruche hesitated over one or two answers, and Teya had one error. But overall, they did excellent work.

Then we had an online session with their math tutor. Bruche’s work was with squares and square roots, while Teya’s was on cubes and cube roots. The math tutor gave them each an explanation and then a set of exercises.

Teya snapped photos of the completed papers where they had written their answers and sent them to the tutor by WhatsApp.

Our Puzzle

I also asked Bruche to tell me if the table where we have our puzzle is a square. He thought it was, but when he measured, he found it’s a rectangle.

Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge Span

The puzzle we’re working on has a picture of the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge Span, built about seven years ago. This puzzle is such a challenge that we’re about to give up and put it back in the box.

The bridge was a boon for Sam when he lived in Lekki and had to take his children to school in Ikoyi. He doesn’t use it often now that he’s moved to Ikoyi. But Beth has been making use of it for the last couple of days, joining others for exercise.

“Fitness inclined residents of Lekki phase 1 and Ikoyi use the wide curbs of the bridge for jogging and running, usually in the early mornings and evenings. . . The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, went on a morning run on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge on his visit to Lagos,” I learned from Wikipedia.

Beth ran into a friend from her primary school both times on her walk or jog across the bridge!

But our puzzle has tons of black sky and lots of pieces that almost fit! We’d like another puzzle to try. And I read in The New York Times that puzzle-makers are struggling to fill orders! We’re guessing we can find one here in Lagos, but haven’t tried yet.

I hope we’ll get to Scrabble this afternoon!

Funeral Postponed

My husband’s funeral in the village has now been officially postponed! “The decision, according to a statement from the family was in compliance with the ban on public gatherings by government,” according to the notice in Daily Sun.

From Beth’s walk

We have no idea when we’ll be able to hold it. I suspect it may be months, but it could be sooner.

So was my trip to Nigeria in vain? Of course not. I’ve had the chance to spend time with Sam and his children. Stepping in with the children on their school work has been fun. Beth and her daughter are here too, so we’ve had lots of family time.

I’ve also been reminded of the challenges of living in the country.

Beth’s Photographs

On her morning walks and runs Beth has been photographing the flora and fauna.

I’d forgotten what a great photographer she was.

She also found a lizard this morning – one with the orange head that bobs up and down. I’ll include that photo next time.

We’ll see what else she finds!

If you have photos you’d like to share, let me know!
