Nelson Mandela Day and Hawaii Travel

Nelson Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela Day

I had already noticed the tribute to Nelson Mandela in the July 18 Google Doodle – did you see it? Then I read Vinnie Ferraro’s blog of that day and learned the reason. On Friday he said, “the world celebrated the first Nelson Mandela Day. It is a day to honor the man who endured much suffering to liberate his people. Much of the world celebrated the occasion by performing 67 minutes of community service to mark Mandela’s 67 years of dedication to South Africa. He was truly one of the greatest figures of the 20th century.” During the day I saw an article from Al Jazeera and other tributes as well.

Aloha

Early tomorrow morning I leave with my granddaughter Nkiru for Hawaii. We’re going on a Road Scholar intergenerational trip for grandparents and grandchildren, with the children between the ages of 10 and 14.

Nkiru may be the oldest. She will turn 15 on the final day, July 29, when we fly home from Kona. She is an excellent photographer so I’ll have pictures for you. And I promise a picture of her!

But I may not be able to post on the next two Afo’s – July 24 and 28. I will try but circumstances of internet access and time may prevent my connecting with you. And today’s post is very brief. We need to wake up at 5:15 for a 7:59 am flight from Philadelphia, where I’m spending the night. My daughter Beth will drive us to the airport tomorrow morning. Aloha!

Do you have travel plans with family?
